Abstract
699,813. Endless conveyers. MIDLAND COUNTIES DAIRY, Ltd., and BIRCH, J. E. Aug. 20, 1951 [Dec. 2, 1950], No. 29539/50. Class 78 (i). Apparatus for locating crates or boxes 10 carried in a train by parallel conveyer chains 11 of the kind in which a roller 19 is so mounted that it can be moved down below the level of crate-stopping position is characterised in that means are provided for intermittently raising and lowering the roller in such timed relation relative to the speed of travel of the crates 10 that having been lowered to allow a crate to pass above it, the roller is raised again while the crate is still above it, but after the transverse centre line of the crate has passed beyond the roller. The roller 19 is supported in brackets 18 integral with a plate 17 pivotally mounted on a rod 16 supported between the chain troughs 12, and is raised above the chains to its "stop" position by introducing pressure fluid through a conduit 27 to a single-acting cylinder 23 provided with a piston rod 22 connected to struts 20 secured to the plate 17. The rod 22 is retracted by a spring to lower the roller 19 below the chain 11. The supply of pressure fluid at intervals to the cylinder 23 is controlled by a valve 39 operated by a further cylinder 40 connected to a distributing valve 38 as described in Specification 699,806. When a crate is stopped by the roller 19, a plate 31 on an arm 28 pivotally mounted on a pin 29 supported in lugs 30 on a side frame 14 of the conveyer, pushes the crate transversely against a plate 35 secured to the opposite side frame 14 so as to position correctly the crate. This movement of the plate 31 is effected by a piston rod 32 operating in a fluid pressure cylinder 33 controlled by the valve 38. The piston rod 32 is returned to its retracted position by a spring. The cylinder 33 is mounted on a pivot pin 36 in a pair of lugs 37 on one of the depending brackets 25 in which trunnions 24 of the cylinder 23 are housed.
