Abstract
698,821. Snap-action switches. TELEPHONE MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. March 24, 1952. [March 28, 1951 ; Oct. 17, 1951], Nos. 7221/51 and 24262/51. Class 38 (v) A switch has a toggle mechanism with a compression spring 3 and a rigid member 1 pivoted together at 2, the movement of the toggle mechanism being limited by stops acting on an intermediate portion of the rigid member, the end of the rigid member 1 remote from the spring engaging a contactmaking member. In the double-pole switch of Fig. 2, two snap-acting toggles are provided, each rigid member 1 engaging a contact-carrying spring blade 12. The stops are provided by the sides of slots 14 in upstanding ears 15, with which projections 16 on the members 1 co-operate. The pivots 2 are slidable in slots (not shown) in the operating dolly 6, which has bores 4 housing the springs 3. When the dolly is moved from one position to the other, the pivots 2 are moved through the dead-centre position to cause the toggles to snap over to open or close the contacts. In the event of spring breakage or welding of the contacts, positive actuation is provided by the rocking of the rigid members 1 about the stops. In a modification, Fig. 5, the rigid member co-operates with stops 70, 71 and is effective to move a rectilinearlyslidable insulating contact-carrier 50. The carrier slides on ball bearings 53 and carries spring-biased bridging contacts 75, 76. In a further construction, Fig. 4 (not shown) the contact carrier is metal plate.
