Abstract
698,754. Hydraulic couplings. BECKER, J. E. April 11, 1951, No. 8452/51. Class 69(ii) In a hydraulic coupling an impeller 2, secured to a driving shaft 4 and having centrifugal pump vanes 20 and inlet and outlet ports 39, 40 between the vanes, and a runner 14 secured to a driven shaft 10 are contained in a rotatable coupling housing 13 controlled by a brake 42 and having outlet passages 25 controlled by spring pressed ball valves 45, communicating with a fluid reservoir 5 secured for rotation with the driving shaft 4. Scoop pipes 33 mounted in a stationary boss 23 are swingable by a lever 36 to engage the centrifugally formed ring of liquid in the reservoir 5, and communicate through ducts 38 with the housing 13. Speed is controlled by braking the housing 13, which normally rotates with the impeller, causing the vanes 20 to pump liquid through the passages 25 to the reservoir 5, and by causing the scoops 33 to engage the liquid ring to supply liquid to the housing. In another form the reservoir is integral with the coupling housing, the impeller is extended to form a housing around the runner and the ball valves are disposed inwards of the periphery of the coupling housing whereby residual liquid can form a liquid ring to restart rotation of the housing when the brake is released.
