698,718. Making chains. LINDE, H., LINDE, E., and LINDE, O., [trading as LINDE MASCHINENFABRIK, E.]. Nov. 28, 1951 [Sept. 24, 1951], No. 27893/51. Class 83 (ii). [Also in Group XXX] A device for assembling roller chain links in which the parts are assembled in the vertical direction by means of plungers, and pass in several stages along a horizontal assembly path to which the parts are fed at corresponding intermediate stations out of hoppers is characterized in that the parts leave the hoppers vertically above the assembly path. In a machine for carrying out the invention the parts to be assembled into a chain link with the exception of the lower side-plate 10, are discharged from hoppers on to a feeding path 9 lying vertically above an assemblage path 8. The lower side-plates 10 are discharged directly on to the path 8 from their hopper 11. The sleeves 12 are discharged on to the feeding path 9 from the double hopper 13a, 13b, the rollers 14 from the double hopper 15a, 15b and the upper side-plates 16 from the hopper 17. The rollers 14 slide out of a charging funnel (not shown) with their axes horizontal into a hopper 39 of rectangular cross-section (Fig. 7). At the foot of this hopper they are pushed by a spring- loaded cam-operated sliding member 41 over a mandrel 42 which is initially horizontal but ends in the vertical direction in the feeding hopper 15a or 15b. Both the partially assembled members on the assemblage path 8 and the individual parts on the feeding path 9 are conveyed from one station to the next by gripping members 19 having recesses 18, said gripping members being adjustably supported in a slide 25. During the return movement of the grippers all members on the path 8 are held by upwardly moving pins 20. The parts fed to the assemblage stations are impaled by pins 21 and then, after the sliding parts 22 of the feeding path 9 have moved aside, are pressed by plungers 23 on to the part, or assembled parts, lying below on the path 8. The upper stage of the gripping member 19 may be provided with a spring-loaded pin 29 which, in the absence of a part, e.g. the sleeve 12, enters a bore 31 in the rear wall 32 of the machine and checks the forward movement of the gripping member. In this event, the pull-rod 33, Fig. 6, which operates the gripping members, forces a spring-loaded pin 34 against a two-armed lever 36 whereby a disengaging lever 37 is tripped and the driving coupling 38 released. The pin 29 on entering the bore 31 may close an electric contact and so actuate the lever 36 electromagnetically.
