698,549. Tappets. STANCLIFF, C. L. Oct. 26, 1950, No. 26184/50. Class 80 (iii). [Also in Group XXVII] An improvement in the silent tappet device of Specification 669,169 consists in arranging the springs 5, acting on the discs A, B to separate them by the cam action of balls C in recesses 2, 12 of discs A, B respectively, in pockets; 4, 13 within the perimeter of the discs. The springs may lie inside or outside of the row of balls C and the pockets are preferably formed by a pressing operation. A modification consists in dispensing with the balls C and having projections on one disc engaging cam recesses in the other, the spring action causing separation of the disc in a similar manner. The discs A, B with the balls and springs are formed as an assembly for insertion between an existing tappet D and a push rod or valve stem E.
