Abstract

Copolymers are prepared from methyl methacrylate and (a) from 5-35 per cent secondary-valency-type and (b) from 0.1 to 10 per cent primary-valency-type cross-linking monomers, component (a) being present in greater proportion than component (b). The secondary-valency-type cross-linking monomer may be one or more of methacrylic, acrylic, maleic, crotonic, itaconic or a -chloracrylic acids, the amides and substituted amides of these acids, N-methylol methacrylamide and N-methylol acrylamide. The primary-valency-type cross-linking component may be one or more of vinyl or allyl methacrylate, glycol dimethacrylate, glycerine di- and tri-methacrylates, N : N-methylenedimethacrylamide, the corresponding acrylic acid derivatives, divinylbenzene, triacrylyl hexahydrotriazine, vinyl and allyl crotonate, or may be a compound which also contains a secondary-valency-type cross-linking group such as b -vinyl acrylic acid or butadiene 2-carbonic acid. Polymerization may be carried out in bulk in the presence of benzoyl peroxide as catalyst. The copolymers may be used for the production of dishes, beakers, cups, lamp cases and lenses.
