Abstract

697,628. Electrostatic filters. AIR PREHEATER CORPORATION. Nov. 7, 1950 [Nov. 25, 1949], No. 27170/50. Class 39(i) An electrostatic precipitator comprises a conduit 10 made up of vertically disposed tubular members 12, 20 with intermediate chambers, the tubular members 12, 20 forming grounded collecting electrodes and enclosing high potential electrodes 16, 22, electrode leads 24 extending into some of the chambers, insulators 28 for the leads 24, nozzles 33 for introducing moisture in the form of steam into the dust laden gas, water cooling jacket 36 for tubular members 12, 20 to form condensation surfaces 44, annular troughs 48 and drains 50 for collecting and removing the stream of condensed liquid and dust particles flowing down the tubular members 12, 20, and heating coils 32 for keeping insulators 28 dry. Rods 24, 26 also serve as electrode supports. The particles removed may be ash or dust, especially from gases of combustion. The ionization section is short and the collector section much longer since the particles are quickly ionized but only travel slowly to their collecting surfaces. The steam and cooling water flow may be regulated to give any desired thickness of water film. Condensable vapour originally present in the gas may also be removed in this manner. Gases forming solid or liquid compounds with water, such as SO 2 or NO 2 , may also be removed. Some steam condenses on collector electrode 22 and keeps it clean..
