Abstract
697,316. Rotary - mould - table compressionmoulding machines. ARMSTRONG CORK CO. Feb. 10, 1950 [Feb. 28, 1949], No. 3460/50. Class 87 (ii). Dies 8, 9 mounted on plungers 6, 7 are slidably mounted in a continuously rotatable carrier 3 supported on bearings 4. The plungers 6 are raised and lowered by fixed cams 19, 20. The plungers 7 are cushioned by fluid-actuated bellows 24 in a sealed chamber 25. A diaphragm 27 of the bellows is connected to the plunger 7 by a rod 26. The chambers 25 are connected by pipes 35, 33 to a reservoir 31. The fluid pressure system may be pneumatic or hydraulic, and if hydraulic, a pneumatic bulb 37 acts as a cushion. In operation, after curing a moulded article, the cams 19 raise the upper dies and the moulded article is removed. The bend between the article and the die 8 is first broken by an abutment 48, Fig. 2, which engages a pin 47 on the plunger 7, to turn it slightly. A small vibrator 49, Fig. 6, may also be provided to loosen the articles. The article may be unscrewed from the die by a moving belt 56. A knock-out device may be provided, acting through plunger 6. If an article has not been removed, it engages a button 61, Fig. 6, which causes a pin 63 to rise and prevent material from being fed to that die cavity. Material is fed to the dies by a shoe comprising two parts 74, 75. The part 75 is mounted on an arm 76 and is slidable with respect to the part 74 which is mounted on an arm 71. The arms 71, 76 are pivoted about 72 by a cam 67 in one direction and by a spring 73 in the other. As the feeding shoe is moving over the die cavity, under the action of the spring, the arm 76 is stopped by a bolt 80 engaging a stop 81, to open the bottom of the shoe and allow the material to fall into the cavity. This feeding apparatus comprises the subject-matter of Specification 697,378. The material may be powder or a preformed pill and it may be preheated. As the carrier rotates, the plunger 6 drops and then the cam 20 forces the plunger down, moving the die 9 down and expanding the bellows 24 to apply moulding pressure to the material. The cams 19 may have a raised part (see Fig. 3, not shown) to lift the die 8 momentarily to allow the relief of gases. The dies are heated by conduction from the plungers which are heated by elements 38, 39. The elements are controlled separately by thermo-couples 43. The current is supplied through slip rings 42.
