Abstract

697,267. Travelling-wave tubes. LELAND STANFORD JUNIOR UNIVERSITY, BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF. Aug. 29, 1951 [Aug. 30, 1950], No. 20381/51. Class 39(i) [Also in Group XL(c)] A travelling wave tube is made to operate as an oscillator by the provision of wave reflecting means 35, 37 at or near each end of the slow wave structure, as shown a helix 3, and one of the reflectors 37 is adjustable along the axis to ensure that the spacing between the two reflecting means can be made equal to an integral number of half wavelengths at the desired frequency of operation. The helix is terminated at either end by transition sections 27, 29 of varying pitch wound in grooves 33 in hollow conductive members 31 which convert the longitudinal E wave on the helix to a radial or TEM mode which is stated to be more easily reflected without the generation of higher order modes. Reflectors 35, 37 may be coupled to inner and outer conductors 31, 32 conductively and/or capacitatively, for example as shown, and reflector 37 is adjustable for fine tuning and determination of the correct number of half wavelengths by means of linkage comprising piston 41, screw 43, gears 45 to crank handle 47. Coarse tuning is obtained by variation of the beam accelerating voltage by means of adjustable voltage dividers 21, 23, the helix preferably being highly dispersive and so frequency selective. 11 and 13 are focusing electrodes and 15 is an accelerating electrode; lead 25 connects the helix 3 to the collector 5. Cylinder 32 may be omitted except in the immediate vicinity of reflectors 35, 37. Energy is removed by coupling loop 34 and coaxial line 36. The tube envelope 7 is of quartz. The device may be used as a signal generator or as a local oscillator in a microwave superheterodyne receiver. Specification 668,513. [Group XL(b)], is referred to.
