Abstract

696,945. Paper for bottle labels. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. Jan. 16, 1950. [Jan. 17, 1949] No. 1037/50. Drawings to Specification. Classes 96 and 140. Paper for bottle-labels, which disintegrates readily in warm, dilute, caustic alkali, in a bottle-washing machine, but withstands prolonged immersion in an ice-pail, comprises as binder material, water-insoluble alkali-soluble organic film-forming substance e.g. zein, a copolymer of urea resin-rosin-oil and styrenemaleic anhydride, casein, carboxy methyl cellulose, or an acidic resinous adduct of maleic anhydride and terpenes &c., optionally with plasticizers, and pigments e.g. titanium dioxide or aluminium flake, as components of an impregnating composition or a coating composition. Aluminium or zinc foil may be adhered by a wax of low melting point, melted in the washing machine ; or a metal coating may be applied by vacuum deposition or sputtering &c. The fibres of the paper may be sulphite, &c., or rayon, cellulose acetate, ethyl cellulose, nylon, or vinylidene chloride, and are said to be "dimensionally-stable" i.e. suitable for multicolour printing. An example (3) mentions distributing loose α-cellulose fibres of flock and immersing them in a sticky film of styrenemaleic anhydride copolymer to form the paper base of the label.
