Abstract

696,160. Silos; building blocks. THOMSEN, T. V. June 14, 1951, No. 14143/5,1. Classes 20(i) and 87(i) A silo has ventilation ducts 2 terminating beneath projections 17 on the inside of the silo wall 1. The silo consists of stone, concrete, or brick blocks 1 and is built over a duct 3, a central vertical duct 4 extending the height of the silo and opening into the ducts. A pipe 12 in the duct 3 communicates with a blower 13 and can be moved to engage the lower end 11 of the duct 4 which has aperture 6 in its walls and encloses a piston 14 which can be positioned in the duct 4 to direct air through the grain stowed in the silo. The external, walls of the silo can have projections too, and the ducts 2 can be horizontal, or of inverted V shape to prevent the entry of rain. The projections mav be formed integrally with the blocks 37, as at 38 in Fig. 8, the ventilation ducts 40 being if desired formed in the adjacent lower block 39, or a separate projection, e.g. a sheet metal part 36, Fig. 7, may be attached to a block 20 adjacent the duct 35. If the projections are integral with the block, they may extend the full width of a block or only part width. The ducts 2 or the projections may be formed by tubes embedded in the blocks or in the mortar between vertically adjacent blocks. The piston 14 may comprise two flexible discs vertically spaced a fixed distance apart on a bar extending along the duct 4, or may comprise two piston members spaced vertically apart and connected by a flexible hose to form a bellows.
