Abstract
695,985. Pontoons; floating docks for flying boats. SAUNDERS-ROE, Ltd., and BRIDGES, F. E. Jan. 30, 1952. [Feb. 16, 1951] No. 3825/51. Classes 4 and 113 (i). A unit for constructing pontoons consists of a metal box comprising side and end members 13 and 14 respectively which can be united together by bolting, a detachable top platform 31, at least one inflatable bag or other float 28 to fit inside the box and impart buoyancy thereto, a structure 30 shaped to the form of the bag which is attachable to the box and members 50 projecting from the side and end members of the box for attaching adjoining units together. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 9, the members 50 projecting from the bottom of the sides 13 have been omitted, those projecting from the top have been replaced by male and female outriggers 51, 52 forming hinges for adjoining members, and horizontal shear fittings 54, 55 are provided. Gusset plates 19 in the box have holes 45 for accommodating bollards 46, mooring attachments 47, stanchions 48, or lamp standards. As shown in Fig. 12, units may be joined and moored to form a dock for a flying boat. Other units may be joined to form a floating gangway between the shore and the dock.
