[Also in Group XXIII] A cutting tool, such as a milling-cutter, file, or rasp, similar to those described in Specifications 666,573 and 666,622, and having a number of cutting edges having positive rake and clearance, has at least some of the edges divided along their length by non-cutting ramp-like surfaces which lie below the cutting edges by an amount equal to the maximum desired depth of cut, these non-cutting surfaces rubbing on the work to prevent the edges from digging in. The tool shown in Fig. 2 is a strip 1 of surface-hardened steel with staggered sharpened tongues 4 and is reversely bent into corrugated form as described in Specification 695,830, to provide the curved non-cutting surfaces 5. The relative lengths of the tongues 4 and the surfaces 5 are chosen to suit the material of the work 6, the surfaces 5 being proportionately longer for soft materials than hard materials. The milling cutter shown in Fig. 4 has notches 12 along the length of each tooth 10, the notches having curved bases between 0.001 and 0.010 inch below the cutting edges and being staggered in succeeding teeth.
