Class 5(ii) Animal food is made by cooking wet proteinous material composed of meat, fish, offal or other parts of animal carcase, or other forms of animal or fish protein, mixing the cooked product with dietetically suitable proportions of edible materials which are at least superficially dry, composed of biscuits, cereals or other carbohydrate, vegetables dried or otherwise, or pulses, extruding the mixture in the form of hollow tubes through a large number of openings, breaking or cutting the tubes to short lengths, and drying these lengths. The proteinous material is preferably cooked in steam under pressure; the meat or the like is loaded into crates, each of which has a conical tubular insert in the lower part, the crates are covered with conical or dome-shaped covers and placed one above the other in a pressure vessel, steam is admitted to the top of the vessel and is led from the bottom. One procedure involves feeding pressure-cooked proteinous material and dry material into a mixer, passing the mixture to a grinder, conveying the ground mixture in a hot air current for circulation in a cyclone, and therefrom for extrusion as hollow tubes, cutting the tubes as they are extruded, passing the lengths to a hot air pre-drier and to a second cyclone, and then conveying them through a hot air drier to a storage bunker, from which the dried product is filled into cans. The extruder (Fig. 2.) comprises an extruder plate 25 and wearing plate 26 held together at the front end of an extruder barrel 12' by a screwed-on flange 27; a worm 35 carried on a shaft 33 forces mixture through openings 36 in the plates, the tubular form of the extruded mixture being obtained by mandrels 41 supported in the holes 36 on spiders; mounted on the shaft 33 is a rotary knife 37, which cooperates with the plate 26, and a blade 38 which serves to chop off extruded tubes emerging from the openings 36.
