Abstract
695,352. Microscopes. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Aug. 9, 1950 [May 9, 1949], No. 12335/49. Class 97 (i). A microscope includes an objective consisting of a concave and a smaller convex mirror, the concave mirror having a central aperture for the passage of light rays and the ratio of the radii of curvature of the mirrors being in the range 3.5: 1 to 30: 1. As shown, the concave mirror 1a is mounted in a semi-cylindrical member 1 between which and the grooved extremities of a semi-cylindrical member 2 attached to the microscope tube are steel balls 3. The member 1 is thus slidable relatively to member 2 and is held in place by a steel spring 4 attached to the member 2 and to an annular member 2a integral with member 2. Such relative movement may be effected by rotation of a screw 2b which threads through member 2a and engages one end of a pin 2c mounted in a recess in member 1. The convex mirror 5a is carried by an arm 5b fast on an annular member 5 between which and member 2a are three steel balls 6, one of which rests in the space formed between registering grooves in the member and located adjacent a screw 9 whereby movement of the convex mirror can be effected in a direction normal to the axis thereof. Rotational movement of the mirror, about said one steel ball 6 as pivot is effected by a screw 7 and pin 7a, such rotational movement being against the pressure of springs 8 connected to members 2 and 2a. Data are given for three examples of the objective, and graphs are furnished from which the radius of the convex mirror, the focal length of the objective, the working distance and the mirror separation can be determined for a particular radius of the concave mirror.
