694,700. Electric analogue calculating systems; variable contact resistance. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 5, 1951 [Nov. 3, 1950], No. 25827/51. Class 37. A sine cosine resolver potentiometer comprises a pair of non-linearly wound resistance cards 1, 2 whose edges are progressively notched so that the cards are formed as substantially semicircular rings, which are juxtaposed as a closed ring. Adjacent winding ends are joined and respectively connected to sources E of equal positive and negative voltage, and the centre-taps of the windings are earthed. A shaft 3 rotates a cruciform insulating member 4 whose arms carry 90 degree spaced brushes 5 slidable over the resistance cards along a circular path, and respectively interconnected to brushes 8 sliding over four slip rings 10 coaxial to the shaft, which are earthed through respective load resistances 11, across which voltages appear proportional to sin #, cos #, where # is the angle of shaft rotation. Resilient contacts 12, 13 connected to the appropriate winding ends bridge the junctions of the resistance cards to reduce wear, and the windings are distorted according to a given equation to compensate for the effect of the shunting load resistances on the variation law.
