Abstract

694,545. Boxes. DEMPSTER BROS., Inc. Sept. 17, 1951 [Oct. 11, 1950], No. 21784/51. Class 18. [Also in Group XXX] A number of smaller receptacles 35 Fig. 1, are secured side-by-side in a container with an open front so that material may be discharged from the receptacles through their front gates 53 by tilting the container. The side walls 8 of the container illustrated are fitted with lifting pins 14 for engagement by chains 16 and the rear wall 9 carries a pivoted bail 20, 22 Fig. 2, so that the container may be manipulated by vehicles of the type described in Specification 547,680, [Group XXX]. The pivoted bail comprises an inverted U-shaped member 22 welded to arms 20 joined by a brace 21 and adapted to swing about a shaft 19. As the container is raised by the chains 16 up guides 5 on the vehicle the bail automatically engages a hook 31 pivoted on the guides, so that when the chain 16 is slackened the container tilts about the shaft 19. The bail is automatically disengaged from the hook 31 when the container is raised further up the guides 5 so that the bail rides up a fixed cam surface 34, pushing back a sliding shuttle plate 33 which falls back under gravity to guide the bail over the hook 31 when the container is again lowered. A spring catch 25 carried by brackets from a plate secured to the bail is adapted to engage a keeper 28 on the container to secure the bail when not in use. The bottom wall 10 of the container is formed with feet 11 and with a ramp 12 (Figs. 1 and 5) up which castoring wheels 36, Fig. 5, on the receptacles 35 may run. The receptacles are secured in the container by hooks 43 Fig. 5, turned with a shaft 44 on the container to engage a member 42 on each receptacle by a handle 48, 46 Fig. 1, which is secured in its locking position by a spring biassed catch 49 pivoted at 50 to the container. The front gates 53 of the receptacles are hinged at their upper edges 54 and may be secured in the closed position by catches 59. Further catches 41 serve to lock lids 38 which are biassed by springs 40 to swing open about their hinges 39 on the receptacles.
