694,469. Furniture frames. KNOLL ASSOCIATES, Inc. July 11, 1951, No. 16404/51. Class 52(ii) A chair &c. construction comprises a seat connected with a shell-like . body having an aperture in its centre portion and shaped so as to include a back rest and means or parts adapted to underlie the seat, at least part of the body surface adjacent to the aperture presenting unidimensional curves which are traceable by a straight line generatrix perpendicular t'o the edge of the aperture. Fig. 1 shows a chair with a shell-like body 32 with parts 40, 42 underlying the seat 20 which is mounted on a support 22. The body may be formed from two blanks 32a, 32b, Fig. 3, of bendable material such as metal, plywood or plastic which after being bent to the forms shown in Fig. 1, are connected at 46 and if desired at 48, the curves bordering the central aperture 44 being generated by straight lines G. Arm rests are formed by the parts 36 and the seat 20 projects rearwardly through the central aperture 44. Fig. 5 shows another construction in which the shell-like body 132 is formed from a single blank or may be moulded. Arm rests are omitted in this form. Upholstery in the form of foam rubber pads secured to the surfaces and covered by slip-on material may be provided.
