Abstract
694,384. Powder metallurgy. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK. Jan. 24, 1951 [Jan. 31, 1950; March 21, 1950], No. 1810/51. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). In a process for making porous sintered metal bodies such as accumulator plates or filters, the powder mass either before, during or after sintering is subjected to local pressure treatment whereby there are formed in the body compacted parts of increased strength of grid or netlike structure, whereupon the body is again sintered, preferably at a higher temperature. In an example, a layer of fine nickel powder 1.5 mms. thick is spread in a narrow elongated mould and sintered in hydrogen at 800‹ C. The sintered band is stamped with perpendicular grooves and re-sintered in hydrogen at 1000‹ C., the powder in the region of the grooves having the density of solid nickel. In a modification, after a first sintering at 950‹ C., depressions in the form of a grating are stamped in the band so that 30 per cent of the pore volume is lost. A further layer of nickel powder is then applied so as to fill the depressions and cover the entire surface to a depth of 0.5 mm., the whole being sintered in hydrogen at 1000‹ C. The grooves may be formed by rolling instead of by stamping. The parts to be compacted may have a greater initial thickness than the other parts. Filler cylinders may be made by bending a strip made as above or by moulding the metal powder to cylindrical form in the first instance.
