694,221. Lathe details. SCHUETTE, A. H., COMMER, G., WELCKER, L., and PECHMANN, E. F. VON, [trading as SCHUETTE, A. H. [Firm of]]. June 14, 1951 (Oct. 13, 1950], No. 14158/51. Class 83 (iii). In an automatic lathe or like machine-tool in which the feed movement of the tools is carried out by continuously rotating cams, rapid forward and backward movement of the tool required in drilling deep holes is effected by hydraulic means operating a piston member coupled to the tool, the hydraulic means being in turn controlled by a cam. A drill 16 is carried in a holder 15 secured to a hydraulic piston 14 slidable in a cylinder 13. The latter slides along ways on the bed and carries an extension with a follower roller 36 to engage campieces 12, 12<SP>1</SP>, 27 on a drum 11. The cams 12, 121 control the stepped feed movement of the drill and during the dwell between feed movements the back of cam 121 is utilized at 25 to operate a spring-pressed reversing valve which withdraws the piston 14 and drill to clear swarf prior to the next feed movement. Movement by cam surface 25 back to its initial position allows valve 18 to reverse the fluidpressure to the cylinder and the drill is moved back to a position ready for feed-movement by the cam 121. Cam 27 finally withdraws the drill. The cylinder may be stationary and the tool pressure during feed may be hydraulic with the cams controlling the feed movement.
