Abstract

1,206,411. Spindles. V. H. BALDING. 28 March, 1968 [28 March, 1967], No. 14136/67. Headings B3B and B3C. The vertical spindle of a machine tool comprises a quill 11 into which is drawn a tool-holder 12 by means of an expandable collet 17 engaging in a grooved recess 15 of the tool-holder 12. The expandable collet is moved axially by a sleeve 18 rotatable with the spindle, the sleeve 18 being acted upon by an hydraulic pistoncylinder arrangement 24 via non-rotating plunger 22, sleeve 21 and ring 20. In one embodiment movement of the plunger 22 operates a linkage 25, 26, 27 and 29 to move a second plunger 30 in the opposite direction to plunger 22, a concentric rod 31 attached to the second plunger 30 passes into the expandable collet 17 to engage its jaws in the tool-holder 12. Alternatively the second plunger 30 may be moved hydraulically or in a modification the rod 31 may remain stationary. In this latter case a toolholder 12 is pushed up into the quill to overcome a spring bias and push the expandable collet 17 upwards and over the stationary rod 31 to expand its jaws, the hydraulic piston-cylinder arrangement 24 being then operated to firmly pull the tool-holder into the quill. Driving engagements 14, 14d are provided between tool-holder and quill. When the expandable collet 17 is released on downward movement of the sleeve 18 the tool-holder may be forced out of the quill.
