Abstract

694,186. Jointing by forging. BOWDEN (ENGINEERS), Ltd. Sept. 3, 1951 [Sept. 1, 1950], No. 21663/50. Class 83 (iv). [Also in Group XXV] A method of securing a metal attachmentpiece to a wire cable is characterized by creating indentations in the wires forming the outer surface of the cable and then deforming the metal of the attachment piece around the cable so that it flows into said indentations. The outer zinc-coated high-tensile steel wires 2 of a concentric lay-type cable 1 have multiple indentations 3 disposed on one or more helices at one end of the cable. The indented end portion of the cable is introduced into the smooth interior of a mild steel attachmentpiece 4 and the latter is contracted around the cable by rotary or other radially closing swaging dies so that the metal of the attachment-piece flows into the indentations and into the external helical grooves 5 formed by the wires of the eable. If the outer wires of the cable are of 0.020 inches in diameter, indentations approximately 0.005 inches in depth will serve. The indentations, which are formed by submitting the cable to pressure between dies, may be in the form of circular series spaced at intervals along the cable or on criss-cross or knurling lines. One or more helical series of indentations may be formed by a die comprising a screw-thread, or threads, of a finer pitch than the cable wires. The attachment piece may also be made of bronze, copper, brass or other ductile metal. The Provisional Specification states that instead of forming indentations 3 on the cable, keying members may be inserted between the cable and attachment piece to penetrate both members, e.g. the cable may be coated with carbortindum powder, which may be applied to a quick-drying lacquer film on the cable.
