Description

Process for forming a self looking nut RENE BEAUPERE C:-28850 ,.
According to this invention there is provided a process for forming a self-locking nut comprising the steps of tapering the upper half of the body portion of a right cylindrical nut to form a frustrum of a cone whose axis coincides with the axis of the threaded bore passing through the nut, and swaging the upper half of the body portion with a punch having an inserted V-shaped opening defined by two planes that intersect at an angle slightly bigger than the angle of the frustrum of the cone on the upper half of the body portion such that the cross-section of the bore is made increasingly oval in a direction forward the smaller end of the frustrum of the cone on the upper face of the nut, the major axis of the oval being slightly greater than, and vthe minor axis of the oval being slightly less than, the diameter of* the circular cross-section of the threaded bore in the lower half of the body portion of the nut, / Embodiments of the invention will now be described by waypf example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in whicht- Fig. 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a nut during manufacture; Pig. 2 is an elevation, partly in section, of the tool intended to form the locking feature of the nut; Pig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of a finished nut; Fig. 4 is a top plan view corresponding to Fig. 3i Fig. 5 is a cross-section of a second embodiment of nut; and Pig. 6 is a top plan view corresponding to Fig. 5· Referring to Pig. 1, there is shown a roughly finished nut with a single self-locking action, which nut has a bore 1, having an axis.2, the bore being fully-threaded throughout to the desired pitch and profile. The nut has a lower hexagonally-walled part 5· 30632/3 part 4 of the nut is frusto-conical, as shown, centred on the axis 2, Two diametrically-opposite generatrices of the cone extend to form an acute angle 5 (of 65° for example). The top surface 6 of the nut has a diameter equal to or slightly greater than the diameter of the threaded bore 1, as shown. This roughly finished nut may be produced by any of the following methods of manufacture :- - by cutting from drawn bar stock; • by hot or cold stamping; - by extrusion; - by compression or by sintering from metal powder.
These methods of manufacture can be used only for metal nuts which are, by themselves, capable of withstanding the finishing operation or operations to be v. escribed below. If not, the finished nut is produced either by compression or by sintering from metal powders, or by moulding from a plastics material (a pol amide or a superpolyamide rosin, for example).
The final operation in the manufacture of the nut is carried out by deforming the frusto-conical upper part 4, using a punch 10 (Figure 2 ) i The punch has an inverted V-shape 14 or an inverted cone 15 with two clearances 16 and 17 connected thereto by tangent planes 18, 19, 20 to avoid hollow punching which promote - cracking. The y-shaped opening is defined by two planes that intersect at an angle 11 slightly greater. than the angle

Claims (3)

1. A process for forming a self-locking nut comprising the steps of tapering the upper half of the body portion of a right cylindrical nut to form a frustrum of a cone whose axis coin- ■■ cides with the axis of the threaded bore passing through the nut, and swaging the upper half of the body portion with a punch having an inverted V-shaped opening defined by two planes that intersect at an angle slightly bigger than the angle of the frustrum of the cone on the upper half of the body portion such that the cross-section of the bore is made. increasingly oval in a direction forward the smaller end of the frustrum of the cone on the upper face of the nut, the major axis of the oval being, slightly greater than, and the minor axis of the oval being slightly less than, the diameter of the circular cross-section of the threaded bore iri the lower half of the body portion of the nut.
2. A process according to Claim 1 including the ste of providing a clearance space on the lower half of the body portion around the periphery of the threaded bore adjacent the lower face of the nut.
3. A process for forming a self-locking nut substantially as described above by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings. For the Applicants DRl RROTMKHHOOLLDD CCOOHHNW AANNDD PPAARRTTNHEERS By: IS:CB
