Abstract
694,176. Echo-sounders. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Nov. 16, 1950 [March 27, 1950], No. 7661/50. Class 118 (ii) [Also in Group XL(c)] A high voltage, high peak current pulse is produced in an echo sounder t'ransmitter by charging a number of capacitors in parallel from a voltage source and subsequently discharging them in series through the transmitter. The discharge is initiated by triggering one of a number of discharge devices which are connected so that the firing of the first one causes the others to fire in succession as the voltages of the charged capacitors are progressively added in series across them. Fig. 1 shows a pulse generator in which capacitors 15, 18 are charged in parallel to the voltage of the D.C. source across terminals 1, 2 via resistors 3, 16 and 17 whilst valves 20 and 4 are non-conductive. A triggering pulse applied by closing switch 27 causes valve 20 to fire so that the voltage of anode 6 rises and valve 4 fires the capacitors 18 and 15 discharging in series through the transmitter coil T. In a modification shown in Fig. 2 capacitors C1-C4 are charged in parallel and when valve R1 is triggered the valves R2-R4 are successively rendered conducting so that capacitors C1-C4 alternately discharge in series through the transmitter coil T.
