Abstract

633,099. Pulse frequency dividing circuits. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and GRAYSON, H. March 13, 1947, No. 7001. [Class 40 (vi)] In a frequency dividing circuit a capacitor is charged up in steps by the input pulse train until the potential across it exceeds a predetermined value when switching device is operated and unblocks a valve through which the capacitor discharges, the switching device then being restored to normal and the valve being reblocked after a given delay period. The Figure shows a circuit in which valve 7 is normally cut-off by grid current irow through resistor 20 and is rendered conducting by the input pulses applied at terminals 1, 2 to produce positive-going pulses in its anode circuit, the amplitudes of which are maintained constant by diodes 23, 24. Capacitor 8 is charged up in steps by these pulses via capacitor 27 and diode 28 until the potential across it is such that the normally non-conducting valve 10 of the cathode coupled flip-flop circuit comprised by valves 10 and 11 is rendered conducting and valve 11 is cut-off. The positive pulse at the anode of valve 11 is delayed in the network 13 and renders valve 9 conducting to discharge capacitor 8. When the capacitor has' discharged to earth potential which is ensured by diodes 28, 29, valve 9 is cut-off and the flip-flop returns to its normal state with valve 11 conducting. The resultant negative pulse at the anode of valve 11 cuts-off valve 9 after a delay determined by network 13 and the charging of capacitor 8 recommences. Diode 45 fixes the normal potential of the control grid and cathode of valve 11 and thus the triggering voltage of valve 10 and the output pulse of the circuit is taken from terminal 6.
