Abstract
693,668. Cables. SOC. ALSACIENNE DE CONSTRUCTIONS MECANIQUES. July 23, 1951 [July 21, 1950], No. 17426/51. Class 36. Apparatus for consolidating powdered insulating material 7 in a cable sheath 1 containing one or more conductors 2, comprises a vertically reciprocable support 3 for the sheath and conductors, means 8 for feeding the insulation into the sheath, a number of weights 9 vertically reciprocable within the sheath and together covering substantially the total cross-sectional area of the space to be filled, and means for displacing the mean height of the reciprocation of the weights as the sheath is filled with insulation. Two weights 9, which have a subetantially semi-circular cross-section, are attached by rods 10 to balance beam 11. This assembly is suspended by cable 16, the other end of which carries a counterweight 18. The support 3 is vibrated at 50 c.p.s., and as the insulation is fed into the sheath it is consolidated by the vibration, forming a solid bearing for one of the weights 9 while the other weight is lifted to permit powder to pass. The lower faces of the weights 9 are preferably arranged at an angle to the horizontal which is substantially equal to the natural angle of repose of the powder within the sheath.
