Abstract

1,120,112. Microphones. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 1 Oct., 1965 [5 Oct., 1964], No. 40408/64. Heading H4J. In apparatus for filling the carbon chambers of carbon granule transmitters, a transmitter 15 (Fig. 1), is mounted on a flexible strip 11 with its major axis vertical. The drive 14 of a vibration generator 13 is connected to the strip 11 to vibrate the transmitter 15 in a vertical direction. Carbon granules 18 are fed from a bottle 17 to an opening in the carbon chamber by free fall while the transmitter 15 is vibrating vertically. The bottle 17 is connected by flexible tubing 19 to a nozzle 20 having a rotary tap 21 over the transmitter filling hole. A recess for mounting the transmitter 15 is provided in a platform 10 which also carries a spring clip 22 for clamping the nozzle 20. After filling the carbon chamber, settlement of the carbon is assisted by lightly tapping the transmitter 15 with the gong hammer of a telephone set ringer. In an alternative apparatus (Figs. 2, 3, not shown), a platform (35) has a recess which extends forwards so that a transmitter may be slid into position from the front of the apparatus. The transmitter is clamped in position by a compression spring (43) surrounding a rigid tube (39) and pressing on to a hollow cylindrical member (42). A key (45) in a channel of an upper bridge-piece (38) connects with the tube (39) and can be moved to lift the tube (39) and member (42) to permit a transmitter to be inserted, after which the key (45) can be moved down and looked to clamp the transmitter. The lower ends of the tube (39) and member (42) mate with the transmitter. A rotary tap (47) in the tube (39) extends through a hole in the member (42). The tap (47) has an arm (48) to which a cable (49) is attached. Two solenoids (50, 51) can move the cable (49) to open and close the tap (47). A second vibrator (55) comprising a modified uniselector, when switched on, imparts a horizontal vibration to the transmitter. In operation, an empty transmitter is slid in and clamped to the platform (35). Vibrator (31) is switched on. Tap (47) is opened and subsequently closed by the solenoids (50, 51). Vibrator (31) is then switched off and the vibrator (55) is switched on for the required time. The transmitter is finally unclamped and removed. The switching operations may be automatically controlled by a motor associated with cams which successively operate microswitches.
