693,518. Sterilizing apparatus. DEKKERS, P. M. C., and SIEBOLS, P. Jan. 30, 1951 [Feb. 9, 1950], No. 2343/51. Class 49. In apparatus for sterilizing or pasteurizing the contents of bottles or other containers on trucks in a tunnel comprising a heating portion of the tunnel into which the trucks enter first and in which the temperature of the containers is raised to the sterilizing or pasteurizing value by means of a stream of air heated by steam injection and a cooling portion which the trucks enter thereafter, the trucks are arranged in a continuous row and have partitions which, in distinct positions of the trucks, co-operate with baffles on the floor and ceiling of the tunnel to form a zig-zag passage for the air; the driving mechanism of the trucks is such that they are intermittently moved to occupy successively the distinct positions, whereat the direction of the stream of air with respect to the containers is reversed, and the same stream of air is passed through the whole tunnel in the direction opposite to that of the movement of the trucks. With the apparatus of Figs. 1 and 2, trucks 13 on wheels are moved intermittently through a tunnel in the direction of the arrows y, each movement of the trucks being over a distance A. Each truck has three partitions 16, 17 and 18 or has two partitions 16 and 17 or 17 and 18, the end partitions making contact or being common for adjoining trucks. Baffles 19 extend from the roof 4 of the tunnel and baffles 20<SP>1</SP>, 20" and 20<SP>111</SP> extend from the floor of the tunnel to force air blown through the tunnel to take the zig-zag path indicated by the arrows x. In a shunt conduit from the tunnel is a blower 10 and a steam injector 11.
