Abstract

The invention comprises g - keto - tertiary amines and the carbinols and acylated carbinols therefrom by hydrogenation and acylation, obtainable by the action between formaldehyde, a secondary amine and ketones in which the C=O group is attached to an arylmethyl group which may be substituted, according to the Mannich reaction. In examples the preparation of g -keto-tertiary amines from paraformaldehyde, and dimethylamine hydrochloride in alcoholic solution, with phenylacetone, 3 - phenyl - 2 - pentanone, 1-isopropyl - 1 - phenylacetone, 1 - allyl - 1-phenylacetone, 3 - phenyl - 2 - pentadecanone, 3 : 4 - diphenyl - 2 - butanone, 2 - phenylacetoin, 3 : 3 - diphenyl - 2 - butanone, 1 : 1-diphenyl - 1 - allyl - 2 - propanone, 3 - phenyl-3 - n - propyl - 2 - hexanone, and numerous other ketones, is described; other amines specified include diethylamine, piperidine, morpholine; numerous substituted aryl methyl ketones containing hydroxy, alkoxy, heterocyclic, and halogen substituents are also specified. Further examples describe the reduction of the g -keto-tertiary amine hydrochlorides by catalytic hydrogenation to give the corresponding carbonol hydrochlorides, the halogen substituted products losing halogen in this reduction. The carbinols may be esterified with acetic or other organic acid anhydrides, or chlorides. The free amino compounds may be obtained by usual methods from the chlorides, prepared as in the examples above.
