Converting electric energy into motion of fluids by the action of magnetic fields. In a pump operating by the interaction of magnetic flux 7 and electric current 6 in a conducting liquid 11, fringing currents 10 are reduced by means of a series of insulating louvres 9. These louvres may consist of insulating material or thinwalled metal tubes of flat section, filled with nitrogen or refractory powder.
