Abstract

691,943. Machines for making paper &c. tubes. DICKINSON & CO., Ltd., J. July 26, 1951 [Nov. 9, 1950], No. 27440/50. Class 99 (ii). The central longitudinal part of a web W, e.g. of paper or synthetic plastic such as "Cellophane" (Registered Trade Mark), from which a bag tube is formed, is drawn into contact with the peripheral surface of at least one roller or bar 6, which may be varied in length or diameter or both, so that the longitudinal margins F, F<SP>1</SP> of the web overhanging the ends of the roller are deflected towards the axis of the roller by the longitudinal tension in the web to define fold edges, the margins thereafter being caused to curl in the reverse direction and inwardly as the web passes from the roller towards and through a tube-forming throat 7. The web may be drawn by rolls 2 from a supply reel 1 and pass through an adhesiveapplying station 3 incorporating means for applying transverse and longitudinal sealing stripes of gum S, So. The throat may comprise adjustable guides 12, 12a spaced apart a distance equal to the width of the tube, and flat web-deflecting plates 13, 13a extending across the path of the web to deflect the margins into overlapping contact; alternatively, the guides carry a series of web-deflecting wires or rods which progressively increase in length so that their ends are disposed in helical paths to engage and plough over the upturned margins F, F' in longitudinally-extending waves, or helically-curved folding plates or rails as described in Specification 676,047, [Group XVII], may be used. The supporting plate 11 of the throat 7 may be replaced by a series of transverse rolls rotating about parallel axes. The path of travel of the web may diverge at an angle of approximately 90 degrees between the station 3 and the throat 7. Frusto-conical discs 15 may limit the downward deflection of the web margins, and the web may be drawn through the throat by a direction-breaking and fold-consolidating roll 8. In a modification, there are two spaced-apart rollers 6 between which is located rotatable gussetforming discs, the tube being completely folded by the throat after the web has passed over both rollers.
