Abstract
691,897. Copy-turning. SENECA FALLS MACHINE CO. Oct. 23, 1951, No. 24748/51. Class 83 (iii). [Also in Group XXIV] Reversible mechanical relay mechanism mounted on the crossslide 20, Fig. 5, of a lathe comprises axially-spaced drums 52, 54, Fig. 1, fast on a continuously-rotating power shaft 10, a control shaft 40 geared to oppositely - rotatable wheels 55, 56 loose on shaft 10, other oppositely-rotatable wheels 62, 64 loose on shaft 10 and geared to an output shaft 15, and tapering helical clutch bands 80, 100 loosely encircling the drums 52, 54 and themselves loosely encircled by perforated cages 87 secured to the wheels 55, 56, the wide ends of the bands 80, 100 being secured to the wheels 62, 64 by brackets 81 while the narrow ends are secured by arms 82 to discs 84 frictionally mounted on wheels 55, 56 and having arms 90 held in engagement by springs 94 with adjustable screws 91 mounted in the cages 87. The arrangement is such that, as the control shaft is turned in one or other direction, one or other of the bands is tightened on its drum and shaft 15 is turned by a corresponding amount in the other direction. The gear may, however, be such that shaft 15 is turned in the same direction as shaft 10. The shaft 40 is rotated by a reversible motor M<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5, controlled by a reversing switch 30, 31 actuated by a feeler finger 27 engaging a stationary pattern plate P, and shaft 15 carries a pinion engaging a rack 44 on the longitudinal slide 22 of the lathe, so that as the slide 22 is moved the tool T carried by slide 20 moves in a path corresponding to the contour of plate P.
