Abstract

691,406. Floor polishers. HOOVER, Ltd. Dec. 20, 1950 [Jan. 6, 1950], No. 30990/50. Class 138 (i). A floor polisher of the vertical brush axis type has three brush carriers, one arranged between the other two to carry alternatively a large single brush on the middle carrier or two medium-sized brushes respectively on the outer carriers, and a reduction ratio friction or toothed drive interconnecting an outer carrier to the brush on the middle carrier, so that when a large brush is mounted on the middle carrier its rotational speed will be lower than that of a brush when it is mounted on the outer carrier. The machine, Fig. 1, primarily used for polishing comprises two high speed shafts 12, driven in opposite directions by a motor through a shaft 14 and worm gears 13, which shafts have ends 17 constituting brush carriers for detachable high speed polishing brushes A. These brushes are secured in place on the shafts by the agency of cross pins 18 and spring-pressed ball catches 19. Centrally between the shafts 12, the main frame 10 of the machine is provided with a bearing support or stud 16 which may be integral with or detachable from the frame. This support 16 is also provided with a brush carrier means in the form of a cross pin 39 and a spring-pressed ball catch 41. When it is desired to use the machine for applying and spreading wax or for floor scrubbing the high peripheral speed brushes A are removed and a detachable brush B, Fig. 2, rotatably secured to the stud 16. A detachable pinion 43 having teeth 42 is also secured to one of the shaft ends 17. This pinion meshes with annular teeth 34 formed on the inside of a rim 33 on the back of the brush. This brush owing to the gear reduction and its large diameter will have a slow peripheral speed to prevent flinging of cleaning material over furniture. Intermediate brush peripheral speeds may be obtained by using three smaller diameter brushes as shown in Fig. 3. In this case one of the brushes C secured on the shaft 12 is provided around its periphery with a friction driving band or tyre 61 of rubber or other suitable material. This tyre engages a tyre 51 provided around the periphery of a brush D secured for rotation on the central brush carrier. Owing to the small diameters of the brushes C and D the brush peripheral speeds will be low. The peripheral speed of the brush D is independent of the diameter of the brush since it is driven by the tyre 61. Any desired peripheral brush speed may be obtained by using brushes of varying diameters. If the diameters of the brushes C are increased the diameter of brush D will be decreased and vice versa. Specification 677,475 is referred to.
