Abstract

691,214. Optical apparatus. COUNTY COMMERCIAL CARS (SALES), Ltd. Nov. 7, 1951 [Nov. 9, 1950], No. 24724/50. Class 97 (i). [Also in Group XXI] The invention relates to apparatus wherein an optical projector forms an image of, for example, a kinematographic film on a screen by reflection from a mirror orientable about at least one axis. In such a system the mirror 5 intercepts only the part of the light beam emanating from a particular part of the film or the remainder falling an annular reflector 6 which spreads it over a large screen area. The apparatus is intended to produce a light background to the picture projected on to a part-spherical screen in gunnery instructional apparatus. As shown, the inner edge of the annular reflector 6 is tangential to a plane parallel to the mirror 5 which is recessed. The combined reflector is carried on a parallel motion linkage on a headstock 19. The linkage is actuated by a cord 21 to pivot the reflector about a horizontal axis passing through the mirror 5. Rotation about a vertical axis is produced by rotation of the headstock 19 on the pedestal 23. The cord 21 passes over a pulley 22 on the headstock and pulleys 24, 25, 26 on the pedestal, its end being secured to the end of a lever 27 pivoted at 28. A cord 31 is anchored to a return spring 32 at one end, passes round the cylindrical part 34 of the headstock and is secured at the other end to the lever 35. Changes in aspect of the projected target image are produced by variations in the film itself. Changes in target position are produced by movements of the mirror derived from movements of the lower ends of the levers 27, 35 determined by.cams 38, 39 driven through sprockets and chain 44 from the proprojector. The cams are detachable by a wing-nut 42. To increase the amount of light falling on the annular reflector 6 the kinematograph projector used in conjunction with the illustrated apparatus may be provided, around its objective, with a ring of lamps or an annular lamp and baffles which confine the light therefrom so that it falls only on the annular reflector.
