Abstract

PURPOSE:To effectively utilize luminous flux from a light source by using a light pipe which deforms so that its light incidence surface is circular and its projection surface is rectangular for lighting. CONSTITUTION:The light pipe 4 constitutes a cylinder which has the circular incidence part 31, deforms successively from the circle to the rectangular toward the projection side, and has the rectangular projection part 32. The divergent luminous flux from the light source 1 arranged nearby the focus position of a reflector 2 is converged by the reflector 2 and made incident on the light pipe 2 as nearly parallel light through a condenser lens 3. Then the luminous flux which is made incident on the incidence port of the light pipe 4 is passed through the light pipe 4 while reflected therein, and projected from he rectangular projection port to illuminate a transmission type liquid crystal display panel 5, and an image on a liquid crystal display panel 5 is enlarged by a projection lens 6 and projected on the surface of a screen 7. Thus, the light pipe having the circular incidence port and rectangular projection port is utilized as part of an illumination system to improve the utilization efficiency of the luminous flux.
