Abstract

691,069. Detecting broken threads photoelectrically. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and WARD, L. G. July 31, 1951 [Aug. 1, 1950], No. 19232/50. Class 40 (iii). Broken threads are detected by a photoelectric cell which receives a narrow light beam scanning a region which the broken thread will enter. As shown warp threads in a loom pass from bobbins 20 to a roller 21. Beneath the threads are situated two housings each containing a photo-cell 10, and a light source 11. The light sources each form a narrow beam of light which is reflected from one of mirrors 13, to the photo-cells. The lamp and cell assemblies are oscillated through the angle 12 by a motor 15 and rod 14. So that a broken thread shall interrupt the light beam a gentle stream of air from a nozzle 23 blows on the threads so as to deflect broken threads downwardly. Both cell assemblies feed a common amplifier to stop the machine or operate a warning device. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the lamp and cell are mounted at one end of a carriage which is traversed to and fro beneath the threads and at the other end of which is a plane mirror. The stream of air may be ionized.
