Abstract

A catalytic unit adapted to promote oxidation reactions (especially the combustion of fuel in an internal combustion engine), comprises an inert porcelain type support on which is deposited a base film of active alumina, magnesia, beryllia, and/or thoria, and a finely divided metal or metal oxide applied to and dispersed throughout the base film. The amount of base film is preferably one-half to three milligrams per square centimeter of the surface of the porcelain. The support and the base film may be of identical chemical composition so that their coefficients of expansion are the same. The metallic component may be platinum, ruthenium, palladium, silver, copper, silver-chromium, copper - chromium, copper - manganese, nickel, or colbalt; less active are iron, chromium, lead, and manganese; iridium, silver chromate, platinum-manganese, and platinum-palladium are also referred to. Preferably the metal or oxide is used in an amount of 5-30 per cent of the weight of the base film. Drawings show catalytic units in the form of perforated or slotted discs. In an example a support is dipped in a solution of aluminium nitrate containing active alumina, dried, heated to 1000 DEG F, and coated with a solution of a salt of the metal, which is then decomposed. The catalytic unit may be used in engines of the combustion product type and turbines as described in Specifications 690,804. [Group XXVI], and 690,805, [Group XXVII], or in gas heaters, gas stoves, or gas refrigerators. Other uses referred to are the clearing of exhaust fumes from internal combustion engines or the regeneration fumes from catalytic processes. The activity of the used catalytic unit may be restored by treatment in a reducing atmosphere or by raising the temperature of the feed.ALSO:A porcelain type support is coated with a base film of active alumina, magnesia, beryllia, and/or thoria, and then with a finely-divided metal in order to form a catalytic unit (see Group III). The amount of base film is preferably one-half to three milligrams per square centimeter of the surface of the porcelain. The support and base film may be of identical chemical composition so that their coefficients of expansion are the same. Metallic components referred to are platinum, palladium, ruthenium, iridium, silver, copper, chromium, manganese, nickel, cobalt, iron, lead, and mixtures thereof. Preferably the metal is used in an amount of 5-30 per cent of the weight of the base film. In an example a support is dipped in a solution of aluminium nitrate containing active alumina, dried, heated to 1000 DEG F, and coated with a solution of the salt of the metal, which is then decomposed.
