Abstract

1485370 Sputtered catalysts UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 6 Dec 1974 [10 Dec 1973 12 Dec 1973] 57209/73 and 57681/73 Headings B1E and B1F A catalyst comprises a fibrous kaolin substrate compatible with and supporting a sputtered monatomic coating layer of catalytic material, a major proportion of the coating layer comprising an unagglomerated atomic dispersion. The catalytic material may be a platinum group metal or an alloy or two or more such metals. The substrate may be kaolin fibres comprising 43-47% wt. alumina, 50 - 54% wt. silica and traces of Fe 2 O 3 and TiO 2 . The sputtered layer may be applied by the method of Specification 1455248. The sputtered catalyst product may be used as the element of a catalytic burner for natural gas or calor gas. Such a burner may comprise a casing having a first component 2 carrying a sinuous gas inlet pipe 5 having perforations 8, a second component 3 carryin the catalytic element and a third component 4 carrying a guard mesh 7.
