Abstract

690,559. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd. March 29, 1951 [April 21, 1950], No. 9820/50. Class 103 (i). A disc brake, particularly suitable for heavy motor vehicles, has pairs of pressure plates 11, 12 and 13, 14 extending around about one-quarter of the periphery, which may be forced apart into engagement with friction linings 15 carried by radiallyextending surfaces of U - shape internal recesses in the rotatable braking member 1, by means of fluid-pressure cylinders and pistons 17, 19. The braking member 1 has on its exterior cooling fins 9 broken over a part of the circumference by slots 10 of slightly greater size than the width of the pressure-plates 11, 12, 13, 14 so as to allow for their insertion. The pressure-plates are supported by pins 28 carried in arms 26, 27 extending from a shaft 25 secured to a fixed part of the vehicle. The pins 28 are mounted in the arms 26, 27 by means of bushes 29 having arcuate outer faces so that in conjunction with the spherical ends of the studs 22 in the fluidpressure actuators, it is possible for the plates 11, 12, 13, 14 to tilt sufficiently to compensate for unevenness in the wear of the friction facings 15. The braking member 1 which, as shown, is made of an aluminium outer member 8 cast on to a cast iron interior member may comprise any number of U-shaped components.
