Class 66 A can-opener to form an opening in a can without dangerous rough edges comprises a base member A having flanges 3 and 4 to receive a can B, and a head member 16, carrying an arcuate blade 23 and concentric shield 24, which may be reciprocated to cause said blade to cut a semicircular opening in the top of can B. The head member 16 is carried on a rack 15 engaging with a large pinion 12 secured on a shaft 9 in the base member A and having an operating handle 13 which may be moved to raise or lower the head member 16. The blade 23 has a baffle 26 adapted to bend the cut portion of the can and depress it within the can, and the shield 24 is further from the blade 23 at the lower end than at the upper such that the space there between at the upper end is less than the thickness of the can bead thereby ensuring that the jagged edge of the rim is compressed smoothly against. the side wall of the can Fig. 12, (not shown). A spring may be positioned in the bottom of guideway 14 to abut the bottom of the rack 15 and bias it upwardly. The top may also be completely removed from a can by depressing the blade 23 twice and turning the can through 180 degrees between the two operations, and the blade 23 may be magnetic to attract the severed portion.
