Abstract

690,152. Brushes. HOOVER, Ltd. April 5, 1951 [April 7, 1950], No. 7891/51. Class 19. A brush, more particularly intended for use in a suction cleaner, agitator as described in Specification 690,151 comprises, an elongated flexible plastic back 1 carrying bristles 2 arranged in tufts, each mounted in a hole 7, the brush being formed straight but having sufficient flexibility to adopt a helical form when mounted in the agitator, Fig. 2 (not shown). The back 1 is formed with a shallow longitudinal channel 3 along one face and with a corresponding deeper channel 6 along the opposite face, the channel 6 being flanked by projecting ridges 5. The back is also formed with projecting flanges 4 used to anchor it in the agitator. Each hole 7 is slightly tapered and is closed by a thin web 8 integral with the back, the bristles 2 comprising each of the tufts being bent double and anchored by a staple 10, initially of U-shape, which straddles the bight. The legs of the staple 10 are forced through the web 8 and the protruding ends 11 bent outwardly to lock it in position, being displaced so as to overlap the oppositely-pointing legs of adjacent staples. Flexing of the brush is limited by the sides of the channel 6, while the ridge 5 is raised and rounded at the ends 12 of the brush to form end shields.
