Abstract

690,083. Grab-buckets. PRIESTMAN BROS., Ltd. Dec. 3, 1951. [Dec. 27, 1950] No. 31408/50. Class 78 (iv). In a single rope grab in which the bucket sections are opened by hand or by dumping, part of the mechanism for closing and locking the bucket sections is mounted on a cross beam on which the bucket sections are pivoted and part, a claw shaped hook and catch, on an arm pivotally mounted on members secured to the jaw supporting arms. The bucket sections 1, 2 are pivoted on pins 3 on a cross-beam 4 and are supported by arms 5 and 6 pivoted to a pin 8 and welded to the block 7 respectively. The locking mechanism comprises two hooks 22 pivoted at 23 to members 16 pivoted at 20 to arms 18 secured to the arms 6 and a catch 25 pivoted at 26 to the hook which are held engaged with a cylindrical member 39 mounted on the cross-beam. The hooks are held in engagement by an arm 29 which has a pin 30 engaging in a slot 31 in the member 16 and a roller 32 engaging tracks 33. The pin 30 is held at the end of the slot by the nose 40 of a member 41 pivoted to the member 16 and which hangs under gravity with the pin 43 engaging in the upper end of slot 44. The catch 25 has a tail 36 engaged by a weighted lever 34 which tends to disengage it but is prevented by friction between the catch and member 39. The hauling rope 12 is secured to the grab at 17 and passes round pulleys 14 on the members 16 so that when the grab is dumped the members 16 are lowered, a part 45 on member 41 strikes the member 39 and releases the pin 30 which slides along the slot 31 and releases the arm 29 restraining the hook to one side of the member 39 and the member 34 strikes the tail 36 to release the catch. When the rope is hauled in the arms 16 are raised and hooks and catch re-engage with the member 39. To release the buckets by hand a trip rope is secured to a member 48 having a weighted lever pivoted to the cross beam, a sharp pull on the trip rope causes the weighted end 49 to strike the catch and release it from the member 39.
