689,988. Screwing-up and unscrewing nuts. HOLMAN BROS., Ltd., and COOMBES, F. B. Oct. 8, 1951 [Oct. 12, 1950], No. 24961/50. Class 83 (iii). An impact wrench comprises a driving member 16 driven from a reversible pneumatic or other motor 10 through epicyclic reducing gearing 15, a hammer 18 journalled for axial and rotational movement on an extension 16a of the driving member and an anvil 19 carrying a socket 21. The driving member and hammer interfit to form a fluidtight space 31 to which fluid, such as the compressed air for the motor, is admitted through a bore 28, spring-loaded non-return valve 32 and bore 30, the initial pressure in the space 31 being adjustable to any value up to that of the motor air supply by a screwed rod 34. When the resistance of the nut being driven exceeds a pre-determined value, the rotation of the hammer and anvil is arrested but the driving member continues to rotate so that balls 27 in cam tracks on collars 24, 26 fixed to the driving member and hammer cause the anvil to move up. This upward movement disengages dogs 22 on the hammer from dogs 23 on the anvil and compresses the fluid in the space 31, the energy stored in the compressed fluid being re-applied to the hammer so that it strikes a blow on the anvil when it is forced down to re-engage the dogs again. Both collars may have cam-tracks of constant or varying slope or one of them may be merely a flat thrust-plate.
