Abstract

689,914. Tubular heat-exchangers. TITTERTON, S. H. June 12 1951 [June 22, 1950], No. 15556/50 Class 64 (iii) [Also in Group XXVII] Relates to heat-exchangers in which fluid is heated in a pipe arranged in an annular space between an inner tubular member and an outer casing through which hot gases are passed. According to the invention the inner member E is continuous at one end F with the gas outlet of the casing A, and its other end is covered by a deflector H arranged to direct hot gases entering at D, on to the pipe O or pipes to be heated, apertures J, G for the passage of hot gas, being provided in the deflector H and the inner member E. In the preferred form and as shown, the pipe 0 is arranged within the exhaust silencer of a road vehicle and may be used to heat air or water. The pipe 0 may comprise a single, sinous, copper pipe (as shown) or twin pipes in parallel may be provided and the convolutions of the pipe may be variously arranged. The cross-section of the pipe may be circular, elliptical or flat. The inner member E is supported within the outer casing A by perforated partitions K between which are arranged perforated baffles M.
