Abstract
689,733. Engine assisted cycles. PIATTI, V. Nov. 7, 1949 [Nov. 5, 1948], No. 28793/48. Class 79 (iii) In a motorised cycle, the fuel tank is pivotally attached to the cycle and the engine is mountec solely on the underside of the tank, the assembly being pivotal about the tank support so as tc bring the engine-driven friction driving roller intc or out of engagement with the tyre by means of a hand operated control. The assembly may be normally spring urged into roller-engaging positior with a'handlebar control for separating and maintaining separate the roller and tyre, or vice versa The general arrangement of the engine is as described in Specification 676,767. The fuel tank 2 is pivotally mounted at its forward end by a lug 20 on a bracket 22 adjustable along the rod or tube 23 fixed to the saddle pillar. The underside of the tank has a stiffening plate 11 which carries a bracket 6 to which the engine is bolted. A pair of bolts projecting rearwardly from the engine crankcase carry rollers 26 which embrace the fixed vertical guide rod 27 to guide the assembly in a vertical plane Pivotal movement of the power unit is effected by a Bowden control from the handlebars, the outer casing being anchored to one of the bolts carrying the rollers 26 and the inner wire 37 being fixed to the top of the guide rod 27. The guide rod 27 is fixed tc a forked stay 28 which embraces the rear whee: and is secured to the wheel spindle and braced at 30 to the rear fork 32. The slotted ends of the stay 28 may be sufficiently long to accommodate wheels of different diameters. The top of the tank may serve as a luggage carrier, and for this purpose may be ribbed, and strap buckles 41 may be provided. The rear of the tank may have a depending apron portion 43 to conceal the mechanism.
