[Also in Group XIX] For indicating the strength of a stroke at golf, a ball 15 is connected by a chain or the like 16 to the outer end of a piston rod 13 of a piston 14 working in a pneumatic cylinder 10, the cylinder being anchored at 12 to a fixed base 40 and the piston rod 13 being acted on by a releasable one-way-acting clutch which holds it in the extended position to indicate the strength. The clutch comprises a sleeve 24 loaded by a spring 25 and embracing the rod 13, balls 23 being carried by the sleeve and wedging between the rod and a fixed cone 22 on inward movement of the rod. The clutch can be released by pulling the sleeve outwardly by a flange 35. The rod is marked with calibrations 53. The inner end of the cylinder and the barrel thereof have air entry and escape apertures 27, 31 which can be aligned with openings 28, 32 of varying size on movable members 29, 33 to vary the resistance of the pneumatic device. The connection 12 forms a pivot and the deviation of the device over markings 41 on base 40 indicates the degree of "pull" or "slice". The chain 16 may carry abutments 38, 39 between which moves a weight 37 when the chain is extended from the position shown in Fig. 6. In a modification, the pneumatic cylinder is mounted on a heavy trolley the displacement of which indicates the strength of the stroke. According to the Provisional Specification, the pneumatic cylinder may be replaced by a spring device.
