Abstract
<PICT:0688788/III/1> <PICT:0688788/III/2> A device for depositing electrostatically liquids such as paint or varnish on to conducting surfaces consists of a tubular fitting or noozle of insulating material, e.g. quartz, silica, glass, or transparent artificial resin, containing the material to be deposited, in the avis of which is disposed an electrode at a potential difference of the order of 10,000 to 15,000 volts with respect to the object being coated, the electrode having its extremity located at a predetermined distance from the mouth of the fitting, ensuring the necessary resistance to prevent disruptive discharge from the electrode to the surface being coated. Preferably an earth lead is connected to a point in the substance to be deposited at a suitable distance from the entry point of the high tension electrode to protect users against the danger of electrocution. The surface which is to receive the coating may be stationary while the nozzle is movable, or the object may be movable, the nozzle may also receive an axial motion perpendicular to the surface being coated. In Fig. 3, the liquid from reservoir 2 passes into the nozzle 1 in which are disposed the high tension electrode 4 and the earth lead 5, the liquid being projected from the nozzle on to the object to be coated. In Fig. 5, which illustrates a machine in which tubes may be varnished, a framework 17 supports a revolving barrel 8 carrying a number of chucks 9 holding the tubes 11. The chuck that comes into alignment with the nozzle 1 is rotated while the nozzle advances within the tube under the action of the cam 12 pushing the supporting carriage 13.
