Abstract

688,467. Hauling railway wagons; winch drives. NORTONS (TIVIDALE), Ltd., HOWARD, A. M., and HARPER, W. G. Oct. 11, 1950. [Oct. 19, 1949.] No. 26895/49. Classes 78 (iv), 78 (v) and 104 (ii). In a wagon haulage system wherein a bogie may be pulled in both directions by the difference in tension of two ropes one extending forwardly and the other rearwardly thereof and the bogie carries a mechanism for engaging a wagon axle the mechanism is operated by varying the tension in one of the ropes. A bogie 1 is drawn in one direction by a hauling rope 22 and in the other by a trailing rope 26 both ropes being attached to a haulage drum 57. The drum 57 is rotated by a small motor no through epicyclic gearing 62 to draw the bogie 11 beneath a wagon, the shaft of the main forward drive motor 58 being held fixed by a brake 70. Once the bogie is in position beneath the wagon a thruster 68 is operated to move a pulley 66 to increase the tension in the rope 26 and thus raise rollers 42 on a U-shaped member 28 into engagement with the wagon axle 30. Continued pull exerted on the rope 26 by rotation of the drum 57 presses the roller 42 against the axle 30 to tilt the member 28 against a spring 45 thus bringing a roller 44 on the member 28 into a position to engage the other side of the axle 30; the member 28 is thereafter held in this position by a pivoted catch 50. The additional effort which would be required to move both the bogie 1 and the wagon will cause a fluid transmission drive 72 to slip and when this occurs the operator stops the motor 60 and applies a brake 74 : the brake 70 is then released and the larger main forward drive motor 58 is started so as to the drum 57. After the wagon has reached the required position the thrustor 68 is released so that the arms 34, 35 carrying the member 28 drop to disengage the axle 30 and the bogie 1 is then returned to a position to engage a further wagon by the motor 60 driving the drum 57. Overrunning of the bogie 1 at either end of its travel is prevented by a limit switch 76 driven by the drum 57. The bogie carries two members 28, one on either side, to engage the axle 30 near the wagon wheels. Specification 688,468 is referred to.
