Abstract

687,847. Gas turbine plant. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Sept. 21, 1950 [Aug, 5, 1949], No. 20473/49. Class 110(iii) A fuel system for a gas turbine engine comprising a shut-off cock to control the fuel supply to the engine during starting has a manually operated selector lever connected with the shut-off cock which in a first position prevents opening of the cock and in the second position permits opening of the cock, and a device responsive to a selected engine rotational speed to control the opening of the cock when the lever is in the second position. A shut-off cock 24, Fig. 2, in the fuel supply line 23 of a gas turbine engine is operated by a hand lever through a push-pull rod 42 which has a lost motion connection 39 to the operating arm 38 of the shut-off cock. The arrangement is such that when the hand lever is moved from its closed to its open position, the spring 41 is compressed and the operating arm 38 loaded in the sense of opening. The cock 24 is held in the closed position by a detent 37 engaging a notch 37a. When the engine reaches a predetermined rotational speed, a centrifugal governor 33, Fig. 3, mounted on the drive shaft of the electric starting motor 25 closes the contacts 34a of a switch 34 and energises the solenoid 36. This releases the detent 37 and allows the cock 24 to open. In a modification, Fig. 4, two shut-off cocks 24, 43 are arranged hydraulically in series in the fuel supply line 23, the cock 43 being operated by the hand lever 46 through a rod 45 and the cock 24 by the solenoid 36. The operating arm 38 of the cock 24 has a lost motion connection 47 with the rod 45 so that the cock 24 cannot be opened when the cock 43 is closed. The cock 24 will be closed when the cock 43 is closed. The starting motor is mounted inside a structural member connecting the compressor and turbine. In a modification, the cock 24 is spring loaded into its open position and arranged on energisation of a solenoid to be closed and the cock 43 manually operated. When the starting motor is energised, the solenoid is also energised and the cock 24 closed. When the engine reaches the predetermined speed, the governor breaks the circuit and the spring moves the cock 24 to the open position. A torch ignition is energised and fuel supplied to it when power is supplied to the starter motor.
