Abstract
687,552. Making flexible pipes. OWENSCORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION, and GANAHL, C. de. Aug. 7, 1951 [Aug. 17, 1950], No. 18589/51. Class 99 (ii). A number of layers of glass threads 31 coated with a plastic material, e.g. polymers and copolymers from such groups as allyl compounds and their derivatives, polyester resins, styrene derivatives or acrylic acid and ester derivatives, are helically wound onto a mandrel 24, preferably tapered, advanced upwardly as by motor-driven rollers 26, the plastic material being set by a curing treatment, e.g. in a chamber 48 containing radiant heating lamps 49, after which the finished pipe is removed from the mandrels. Alternatively, the plastic material may be cured by passing a heated fluid through a hollow mandrel. The threads, preferably wound at an angle of 63.45 degrees to the axis of the mandrel, may be covered with helically-wound "Cellophane" (Registered Trade Mark) or paper tape 42 to protect the plastic material from the cure-inhibiting effects of the atmosphere. Spools 30 of thread may be carried on tables 8, 9, 10 alternately rotating in opposite directions so that successive layers of the thread are applied in a reverse direction, each table having a receptacle 33 for liquid plastic material through which the threads pass. The pipe may be severed at the abutting ends 43 of adjacent mandrels.
